In an email, I was asked how I feel about the deployment of CCTV surveillance cameras by Waterloo Regional Police. I wrote a letter to the editor in May (find that On The Record) and added the following...


"Regional Council has some influence of Waterloo Regional Police, although I haven't seen them exercise it these last few years.


I strongly oppose this surveillance system. We don't build a safer community through pervasive surveillance. Equally important are the demonstrated misuse of the video data, and worries about data security/sovereignty. We see municipalities racing to remove Flock systems across North American, and our Verkada system has all the same concerns."
